Get ready to race Thunder Bay!

After many unsuccessful attempts by various groups to return stock car racing to the Thunder bay area, Thunder Valley Development spokesman, Richard Schutte is pleased to announce that they have acquired a site where stock and sprint car racing will be permitted.

"The company has completed the severing and rezoning of the property, however there are other necessary steps remaining, including some ongoing engineering studies", Schutte said. " The site also requires clean soil/gravel and clay for the track. Both will have to be trucked in. All donations of equipment and fill will be gratefully accepted "he added.

Construction will begin in Oliver Piapoonage on highway 130 (across from the OPP detachment) as soon as possible. A proposed first race date is late summer of 2013 or 2014.

The developers have extensive business experience as owners and shareholders of several businesses and corporations in various fields of operation. "We are confident we possess the diversity of knowledge, drive and experience to make this venture work" Schutte said. "But this is more than just a business venture, it is a passion we share with many others for competition and racing in general "he added.

Richard was a car owner and driver, and for many years raced at Riverview Raceway, Superior, Cedar Lake and several other Wisconsin and Minnesota tracks. Others in the group are car enthusiasts and supporters of racing, and have a good understanding of the racing industry.

The track will strictly adhere to the bylaw requirements, including fully functioning mufflers and other sound reducing measures. The appointment of a community liaison person may be one of the next announcements, with a facility naming sponsor to follow. Planning meetings with interested clubs, groups and individuals will be announced shortly.

Automobile racing is allowed in Oliver Piapoonage on Wednesdays from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM or on Thursday as a rainout date. A weekend event is permitted once a year.

The last dirt track racing in Thunder Bay area was at the Misquito track in South Gillies that closed its doors in 2002. Prior to that, Riverview Raceways was the most successful venue since the exhibition track in the former Fort William, but also closed in 1994.

Race tourism is a recognized asset in many communities and brings an influx of spending to the race track communities. Although race teams may travel to our track from various Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba locations, there is considerable interest south of the border.\
